LATIN

Instructor:  Bob Stulac

(763) 913-6989

Course Descriptions

Elementary School Latin is designed for students up to about 6th grade.  It may be taken multiple times, and the content of the course will be tailored accordingly.  It is a helpful (though not essential) preparation for taking Latin I-III.

Latin I-III are designed for junior high and high school students (or for adults).  Students entering this sequence of courses will learn all the fundamentals of the language (i.e., the material that a college undergraduate would learn in one year) in three years.

The Advanced Latin Readings are for students who have mastered the fundamentals of the language.  These courses consist primarily of reading unaltered classical Latin texts.  They are designed as Advanced Placement courses.

Students who have previously studied Latin elsewhere are welcome to enter the sequence of courses at the appropriate level.  They should contact the instructor to determine the correct placement.

At the introductory level, the courses will emphasize the basics of the language—grammar, vocabulary, and word formation.  As students progress to higher-level courses, there will be an increased emphasis on translating sentences and reading real classical texts.

There will be weekly homework assignments, which will be reviewed in class but not graded.  Course grades will be based primarily on tests, which parents will be asked to administer at home at their convenience during designated weeks.  Students will be expected to attend class every week, participate actively in class, and complete the assigned homework and tests on schedule.  Especially at the introductory level, daily practice is the key to success in this subject.

Schedule

Elementary School Latin and the three levels of Introductory Latin are offered annually.  The course offerings in Advanced Latin Readings vary from year to year; the courses scheduled for fall 2007 are Jerome and Pliny the Younger.

The instructor has not set a minimum or maximum number of students for these courses.

Parents are invited and encouraged to attend class.  Those who wish to take the class along with their children, with the option of receiving grades for their work, are welcome to do so at no extra charge.
